Allan, was born on 16 April 1982 to parents who were related.
Allan suffered Sanfilippo disease.
Allan exhibited clinical signs of the disease from about the age
of two, and despite numerous attempts to make the diagnosis, over a
four year period, no diagnosis was made.
If such a diagnosis had been made, Allan’s parents would have
received genetic counselling, advising them of the risk of a
further child having Sanfilippo disease, and, in the event that
Allan's mother became pregnant again, they would have been offered
pre-natal testing.
Allan’s mother did indeed fall pregnant with her third child and
did not receive the appropriate tests to establish whether the baby
would have Sanfilippo disease. The third child had the disease.
Paul McNeil settled the case in the sum of £550,000, plus
costs.
