Gavin was a brilliant mathematician. He was cycling across
Putney Bridge when he became embroiled in an argument with a taxi
driver.
The taxi driver sought to deliberately knock Gavin off his bike.
Gavin sustained a very serious brain
injury and died as a result.
The taxi driver was given a 3 year prison sentence.
The defendants to the civil claim sought to argue that Gavin was
partially at fault as he had not worn a cycling helmet.
We obtained expert evidence that confirmed that the wearing of a
helmet would have made no difference. The case settled on a full
liability basis and the widow of Gavin received a settlement of
£655,000.
