Mesothelioma drug gets partial go-ahead

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) approved today the use of of Alimta for the treatment of mesothelioma across the UK. After almost three years of waiting, UK sufferers of mesothelioma will be able to claim Alimta on prescription. Previously, it was only available to patients in Scotland, in parts of the north of England or in connection with clinical trials.

Andrew Morgan, partner in the Asbestos Claims Department of Field Fisher Waterhouse, comment: "This comes as an enormous relief to people who are affected by mesothelioma, although for some sufferers it has come too late. Even so, eligibility is still limited and there will still be mesothelioma sufferers for whom Alimta is clinically indicated who cannot get the drug on the NHS. They should get advice from a specialist mesothelioma lawyer as it may be possible to pay for this treatment by making a claim for compensation."
