An engineering company has been hit with a £10,000
bill after a man had four fingers and part of a thumb severed in a
work accident.
He subsequently had three of the fingers
reattached, but continues to need treatment.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
told Caerphilly Magistrates' Court that inadequate safety measures
were in place at the factory, with the equipment in question being
left unguarded.
Encon Engineering was fined £8,000 and told to pay
£2,000 in costs after pleading guilty to health and safety
violations.
HSE inspector Steve Curry said: "Mr Davies's
injuries were horrific and unnecessary - the incident could have
easily been prevented had the machine been properly guarded.
"Employers have a legal duty to ensure that when
employees are working with machinery, adequate guarding is provided
to prevent workers being injured.
"The use of powerful engineering machinery was a
day to day activity of this company, so it is inexcusable that an
injury like this has been allowed to happen."
