Up to 400 women sue hospital trust

Hundreds of women are suing a hospital after a doctor made their incontinence problems worse, with some suffering "life changing" results.

The Liverpool Women's NHS Trust is being sued by up to 400 women who were treated by surgeon George Rowland for pre-existing incontinence problems.

Of the 400 women suing the trust, around 70 cases have been processed and in 50% of these cases the hospital has admitted medical negligence and offered compensation.

Mr Rowland, the former consultant urogynaecologist was accused of carrying out inappropriate operations and poor post-operative care on the women from the mid 1990s up to 2007.

A spokeswoman for Liverpool Women's NHS Trust confirmed that Mr Rowland no longer worked at the hospital and said the National Health Service Litigation Authority (NHSLA) was progressing the claims. Mr Rowland is no longer allowed to carry out urogynaecological surgical procedures following a General Medical Council (GMC) ruling.
The surgeon has also had conditions imposed on his licence to practise by the GMC.
